SEMINAR UPDATE INFORMATION

Over time items in workbooks from my various writing and publishing seminars need updating, and for those who attended a program 10 or even 22 years ago, I have no way to reach you. Also, I encounter relevant information I want to share. So this is where those items will appear when they take new form.

A standard item in my writing workbooks has been the "Manuscript Format." It was even a bit dated when I first included George Scithers' two-page directions (but it was funny and accurate). However, with the arrival of the computer (looks like it's here to stay), the email, and fax, it is well past time to give you an update (which will appear in all workbooks after 9/05). To see (and download, if you wish) the "new" version, just link to http://www.gordonburgett.com/manuscriptformat.htm.

A good question frequently asked is, "How do you let editors (particularly travel editors) see digital photos that accompany the piece?" The process is a bit baffling because there is as yet no submission (or even size) protocol, so I do one thing first: I open a webpage on one of my sites and post 5-15 of the best shots there as .jpgs. (Check this page as an example, with a few spare--and mediocre--shots taken near Lisbon.) When I submit the copy I refer the editor to that link, plus I add that if they prefer I can also send a selection of pics (or pix) as downloads in .jpg format, on a CD, on a DVD, even on a floppy. That seems to work well. They usually just pluck a shot or two from my website selections. (The older system for 35mm shots that I explain in the "Writing Travel Articles That Sell!" seminar or The Travel Writer's Guide book are still the best means I've found.)
